| 1Therefore we must progress beyond the elementary instructions about Christ and move on to maturity, not laying this foundation again: repentance from dead works and faith in God, | 1Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, |
| 2teaching about baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. | 2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. |
| 3And this is what we intend to do, if God permits. | 3And this will we do, if God permit. |
| 4For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, become partakers of the Holy Spirit, | 4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, |
| 5tasted the good word of God and the miracles of the coming age, | 5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, |
| 6and then have committed apostasy, to renew them again to repentance, since they are crucifying the Son of God for themselves all over again and holding him up to contempt. | 6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. |
| 7For the ground that has soaked up the rain that frequently falls on it and yields useful vegetation for those who tend it receives a blessing from God. | 7For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: |
| 8But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is useless and about to be cursed; its fate is to be burned. | 8But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. |
| 9But in your case, dear friends, even though we speak like this, we are convinced of better things relating to salvation. | 9But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. |
| 10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name, in having served and continuing to serve the saints. | 10For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. |
| 11But we passionately want each of you to demonstrate the same eagerness for the fulfillment of your hope until the end, | 11And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: |
| 12so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and perseverance inherit the promises. | 12That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. |
| 13Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, | 13For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, |
| 14saying, "Surely I will bless you greatly and multiply your descendants abundantly." | 14Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. |
| 15And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise. | 15And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. |
| 16For people swear by something greater than themselves, and the oath serves as a confirmation to end all dispute. | 16For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. |
| 17In the same way God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath, | 17Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: |
| 18so that we who have found refuge in him may find strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us through two unchangeable things, since it is impossible for God to lie. | 18That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: |
| 19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast, which reaches inside behind the curtain, | 19Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; |
| 20where Jesus our forerunner entered on our behalf, since he became a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. | 20Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. |
