Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings,1Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.2through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,
They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.3who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
For every creation of God is good and no food is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
For it is sanctified by God's word and by prayer. 5for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.6If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.
But reject those myths fit only for the godless and gullible, and train yourself for godliness.7Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;
For "physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come."8for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.9The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.
In fact this is why we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers. 10For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Command and teach these things.11Command and teach these things.
Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness, and purity.12Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have, given to you and confirmed by prophetic words when the elders laid hands on you.14Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.
Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.15Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you. 16Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
