From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those temporarily residing abroad (in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia, and Bithynia) who are chosen1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To those chosen, living as exiles dispersed abroad in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ's blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure! 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient and to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you,4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
who by God's power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.5You are being guarded by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials.6You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials
Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold--gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away--and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.7so that the proven character of your faith--more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire--may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
You have not seen him, but you love him. You do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,8Though you have not seen him, you love him; though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy,
because you are attaining the goal of your faith--the salvation of your souls. 9because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who predicted the grace that would come to you searched and investigated carefully.10Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who prophesied about the grace that would come to you, searched and carefully investigated.
They probed into what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified beforehand about the sufferings appointed for Christ and his subsequent glory.11They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
They were shown that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things now announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things angels long to catch a glimpse of. 12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.
Therefore, get your minds ready for action by being fully sober, and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.13Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance,14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance.
but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct,15But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct;
for it is written, "You shall be holy, because I am holy."16for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.
And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one's work, live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence.17If you appeal to the Father who judges impartially according to each one's work, you are to conduct yourselves in reverence during your time living as strangers.
You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed--not by perishable things like silver or gold,18For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,
but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ.19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was manifested in these last times for your sake.20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for you.
Through him you now trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
You have purified your souls by obeying the truth in order to show sincere mutual love. So love one another earnestly from a pure heart.22Since you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth, so that you show sincere brotherly love for each other, from a pure heart love one another constantly,
You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.23because you have been born again--not of perishable seed but of imperishable--through the living and enduring word of God.
For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of the grass; the grass withers and the flower falls off, 24For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was proclaimed to you. 25but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this word is the gospel that was proclaimed to you.
