Then the LORD spoke to Moses: | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, |
"Command the Israelites to expel from the camp every leper, everyone who has a discharge, and whoever becomes defiled by a corpse. | 2“Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body. |
You must expel both men and women; you must put them outside the camp, so that they will not defile their camps, among which I live." | 3You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.” |
So the Israelites did so, and expelled them outside the camp. As the LORD had spoken to Moses, so the Israelites did. | 4So the Israelites did this, sending such people outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses. |
Then the LORD spoke to Moses: | 5And the LORD said to Moses, |
"Tell the Israelites, 'When a man or a woman commits any sin that people commit, thereby breaking faith with the LORD, and that person is found guilty, | 6“Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty |
then he must confess his sin that he has committed and must make full reparation, add one fifth to it, and give it to whomever he wronged. | 7and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution, add a fifth to its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged. |
But if the individual has no close relative to whom reparation can be made for the wrong, the reparation for the wrong must be paid to the LORD for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement by which atonement is made for him. | 8But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest along with the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him. |
Every offering of all the Israelites' holy things that they bring to the priest will be his. | 9Every sacred contribution the Israelites bring to the priest shall belong to him. |
Every man's holy things will be his; whatever any man gives the priest will be his.'" | 10Each man’s sacred gifts are his own, but whatever he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.” |
The LORD spoke to Moses: | 11Then the LORD said to Moses, |
"Speak to the Israelites and tell them, 'If any man's wife goes astray and behaves unfaithfully toward him, | 12“Speak to the Israelites and tell them that if any man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him |
and a man has sexual relations with her without her husband knowing it, and it is hidden that she has defiled herself, since there was no witness against her, nor was she caught-- | 13by sleeping with another man, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act), |
and if jealous feelings come over him and he becomes suspicious of his wife, when she is defiled; or if jealous feelings come over him and he becomes suspicious of his wife, when she is not defiled-- | 14and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself— |
then the man must bring his wife to the priest, and he must bring the offering required for her, one tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he must not pour olive oil on it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering of suspicion, a grain offering for remembering, for bringing iniquity to remembrance. | 15then he is to bring his wife to the priest. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, an offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity. |
"'Then the priest will bring her near and have her stand before the LORD. | 16The priest is to bring the wife forward and have her stand before the LORD. |
The priest will then take holy water in a pottery jar, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle, and put it into the water. | 17Then he is to take some holy water in a clay jar and put some of the dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. |
Then the priest will have the woman stand before the LORD, uncover the woman's head, and put the grain offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of suspicion. The priest will hold in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. | 18After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse. |
Then the priest will put the woman under oath and say to the her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you, and if you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband's authority, may you be free from this bitter water that brings a curse. | 19And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse. |
But if you have gone astray while under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself and some man other than your husband has had sexual relations with you. . .." | 20But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and have defiled yourself and lain carnally with a man other than your husband’— |
Then the priest will put the woman under the oath of the curse and will say to the her, "The LORD make you an attested curse among your people, if the LORD makes your thigh fall away and your abdomen swell; | 21and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse—‘then may the LORD make you an attested curse among your people by making your thigh shrivel and your belly swell. |
and this water that causes the curse will go into your stomach, and make your abdomen swell and your thigh rot." Then the woman must say, "Amen, amen." | 22May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and cause your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen, Amen.’ |
"'Then the priest will write these curses on a scroll and then scrape them off into the bitter water. | 23And the priest shall write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water. |
He will make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and the water that brings a curse will enter her to produce bitterness. | 24He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and cause her bitter suffering. |
The priest will take the grain offering of suspicion from the woman's hand, wave the grain offering before the LORD, and bring it to the altar. | 25The priest shall take from her hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD, and bring it to the altar. |
Then the priest will take a handful of the grain offering as its memorial portion, burn it on the altar, and afterward make the woman drink the water. | 26Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water. |
When he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and behaved unfaithfully toward her husband, the water that brings a curse will enter her to produce bitterness--her abdomen will swell, her thigh will fall away, and the woman will become a curse among her people. | 27When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, her thigh will shrivel, and she will become accursed among her people. |
But if the woman has not defiled herself, and is clean, then she will be free of ill effects and will be able to bear children. | 28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children. |
"'This is the law for cases of jealousy, when a wife, while under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself, | 29This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority, |
or when jealous feelings come over a man and he becomes suspicious of his wife; then he must have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest will carry out all this law upon her. | 30or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law. |
Then the man will be free from iniquity, but that woman will bear the consequences of her iniquity.'" | 31The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.” |
