Those who devise sinful plans are as good as dead, those who dream about doing evil as they lie in bed. As soon as morning dawns they carry out their plans, because they have the power to do so. | 1Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they accomplish it because the power is in their hands. |
They confiscate the fields they desire, and seize the houses they want. They defraud people of their homes, and deprive people of the land they have inherited. | 2They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses. They deprive a man of his home, a fellow man of his inheritance. |
Therefore the LORD says this: "Look, I am devising disaster for this nation! It will be like a yoke from which you cannot free your neck. You will no longer walk proudly, for it will be a time of catastrophe. | 3Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am planning against this nation a disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of calamity. |
In that day people will sing this taunt song to you--they will mock you with this lament: 'We are completely destroyed; they sell off the property of my people. How they remove it from me! They assign our fields to the conqueror.' | 4In that day they will take up a proverb against you and taunt you with this bitter lamentation: ‘We are utterly ruined! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed it from me! He has allotted our fields to traitors.’ ” |
Therefore no one will assign you land in the LORD's community. | 5Therefore, you will have no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by lot. |
Don't preach with such impassioned rhetoric,' they say excitedly. 'These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.' | 6“Do not preach,” they preach. “Do not preach these things; disgrace will not overtake us.” |
Does the family of Jacob say, 'The LORD's patience can't be exhausted--he would never do such things'? To be sure, my commands bring a reward for those who obey them, | 7Should it be said, O house of Jacob, “Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things He does?” Do not My words bring good to him who walks uprightly? |
but you rise up as an enemy against my people. You steal a robe from a friend, from those who pass by peacefully as if returning from a war. | 8But of late My people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid robe from unsuspecting passersby like men returning from battle. |
You wrongly evict widows among my people from their cherished homes. You defraud their children of their prized inheritance. | 9You drive the women of My people from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing from their children forever. |
But you are the ones who will be forced to leave! For this land is not secure! Sin will thoroughly destroy it! | 10Arise and depart, for this is not your place of rest, because its defilement brings destruction—a grievous destruction! |
If a lying windbag should come and say, 'I'll promise you blessings of wine and beer,' he would be just the right preacher for these people! | 11If a man of wind were to come and say falsely, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be just the preacher for this people! |
I will certainly gather all of you, O Jacob, I will certainly assemble those Israelites who remain. I will bring them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in the middle of a pasture; they will be so numerous that they will make a lot of noise. | 12I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will collect the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in the midst of its pasture—a noisy throng. |
The one who can break through barriers will lead them out they will break out, pass through the gate, and leave. Their king will advance before them, The LORD himself will lead them. | 13One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate, and go out by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader. |
