Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. | 1So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. |
By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. | 2On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. |
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. | 3And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. |
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven. | 4This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth. The Man and Woman in Eden When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, |
Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. | 5neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the LORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. |
But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. | 6Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. |
Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. | 7Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. |
The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. | 8Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. |
Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. | 9The LORD God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. |
Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers. | 10A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches. |
The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. | 11The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. |
The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there. | 12The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. |
The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush. | 13The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush. |
The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. | 14The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates. |
Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. | 15The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. |
The LORD God commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; | 16But the LORD God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— |
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." | 17except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” |
Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." | 18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” |
Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. | 19So the LORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. |
The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. | 20He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. |
So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. | 21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. |
The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. | 22Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. |
The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." | 23“At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” |
For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. | 24This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. |
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. | 25Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame. |
