New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. | 1Then I saw "a new heaven and a new earth," for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. |
And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. | 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. |
And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, | 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. |
and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." | 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." |
And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." | 5He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." |
Then He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. | 6He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. |
"He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. | 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. |
"But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." | 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." |
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." | 9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." |
And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, | 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. |
having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper. | 11It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. |
It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. | 12It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. |
There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. | 13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. |
And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. | 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. |
The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall. | 15The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. |
The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal. | 16The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. |
And he measured its wall, seventy-two yards, according to human measurements, which are also angelic measurements. | 17The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. |
The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. | 18The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. |
The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; | 19The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, |
the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. | 20the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. |
And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. | 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass. |
I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. | 22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. |
And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. | 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. |
The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. | 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. |
In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; | 25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. |
and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; | 26The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. |
and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. | 27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. |
