Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, | 1Therefore, let us leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, faith in God, |
of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. | 2teaching about ritual washings, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. |
And this we will do, if God permits. | 3And we will do this if God permits. |
For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, | 4For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, who shared in the Holy Spirit, |
and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, | 5who tasted God's good word and the powers of the coming age, |
and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. | 6and who have fallen away. This is because, to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding him up to contempt. |
For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; | 7For the ground that drinks the rain that often falls on it and that produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. |
but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned. | 8But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and about to be cursed, and at the end will be burned. |
But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way. | 9Even though we are speaking this way, dearly loved friends, in your case we are confident of things that are better and that pertain to salvation. |
For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. | 10For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you demonstrated for his name by serving the saints--and by continuing to serve them. |
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, | 11Now we desire each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the full assurance of your hope until the end, |
so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. | 12so that you won't become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance. |
For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, | 13For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater to swear by, he swore by himself: |
saying, "I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU." | 14I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply you. |
And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. | 15And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham obtained the promise. |
For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. | 16For people swear by something greater than themselves, and for them a confirming oath ends every dispute. |
In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, | 17Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath, |
so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. | 18so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. |
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, | 19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. |
where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. | 20Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because he has become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. |
