Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust-swarm when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king's mowing. | 1The Lord GOD showed me this: He was forming a swarm of locusts at the time the spring crop first began to sprout--after the cutting of the king's hay. |
And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, "Lord GOD, please pardon! How can Jacob stand, For he is small?" | 2When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said, "Lord GOD, please forgive! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?" |
The LORD changed His mind about this. "It shall not be," said the LORD. | 3The LORD relented concerning this. "It will not happen," he said. |
Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farm land. | 4The Lord GOD showed me this: The Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the land. |
Then I said, "Lord GOD, please stop! How can Jacob stand, for he is small?" | 5Then I said, "Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?" |
The LORD changed His mind about this. "This too shall not be," said the Lord GOD. | 6The LORD relented concerning this. "This will not happen either," said the Lord GOD. |
Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. | 7He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in his hand. |
The LORD said to me, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will spare them no longer. | 8The LORD asked me, "What do you see, Amos?" I replied, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will no longer spare them: |
"The high places of Isaac will be desolated And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword." | 9Isaac's high places will be deserted, and Israel's sanctuaries will be in ruins; I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with a sword." |
Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. | 10Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words, |
"For thus Amos says, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'" | 11for Amos has said this: 'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland.'" |
Then Amaziah said to Amos, "Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying! | 12Then Amaziah said to Amos, "Go away, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah. Earn your living and give your prophecies there, |
"But no longer prophesy at Bethel, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence." | 13but don't ever prophesy at Bethel again, for it is the king's sanctuary and a royal temple." |
Then Amos replied to Amaziah, "I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. | 14So Amos answered Amaziah, "I was not a prophet or the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman, and I took care of sycamore figs. |
"But the LORD took me from following the flock and the LORD said to me, 'Go prophesy to My people Israel.' | 15But the LORD took me from following the flock and said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'" |
"Now hear the word of the LORD: you are saying, 'You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.' | 16Now hear the word of the LORD. You say: Do not prophesy against Israel; do not preach against the house of Isaac. |
"Therefore, thus says the LORD, 'Your wife will become a harlot in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line and you yourself will die upon unclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'" | 17Therefore, this is what the LORD says: Your wife will be a prostitute in the city, your sons and daughters will fall by the sword, and your land will be divided up with a measuring line. You yourself will die on pagan soil, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland. |
