Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish
And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.2and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.3You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.4I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple!
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.5Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.6I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God.
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.7When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple.
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.8Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.9But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!"
And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.10Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land.
