The daughters of Zelophehad approached; Zelophehad was the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh from the clans of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. These were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. | 1Then the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh of the families of Manasseh, the son Joseph came forward. 2They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the entire community at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, " | 2And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, |
Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among Korah's followers, who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons. | 3"Our father died in the wilderness, although he was not part of the company of those that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but he died for his own sin, and he had no sons. |
Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan? Since he had no son, give us property among our father's brothers." | 4Why should the name of our father be lost from among his family because he had no son? Give us a possession among the relatives of our father." |
Moses brought their case before the LORD, | 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD. |
and the LORD answered him, " | 6The LORD said to Moses: |
What Zelophehad's daughters say is correct. You are to give them hereditary property among their father's brothers and transfer their father's inheritance to them. | 7"The daughters of Zelophehad have a valid claim. You must indeed give them possession of an inheritance among their father's relatives, and you must transfer the inheritance of their father to them. |
Tell the Israelites: When a man dies without having a son, transfer his inheritance to his daughter. | 8And you must tell the Israelites, 'If a man dies and has no son, then you must transfer his inheritance to his daughter; |
If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. | 9and if he has no daughter, then you are to give his inheritance to his brothers; |
If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. | 10and if he has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his father's brothers; |
If his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative of his clan, and he will take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites as the LORD commanded Moses." | 11and if his father has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his relative nearest to him from his family, and he will possess it. This will be for the Israelites a legal requirement, as the LORD commanded Moses.'" |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range and see the land that I have given the Israelites. | 12Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range, and see the land I have given to the Israelites. |
After you have seen it, you will also be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was. | 13When you have seen it, you will be gathered to your ancestors, as Aaron your brother was gathered to his ancestors. |
When the community quarreled in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against My command to show My holiness in their sight at the waters." Those were the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin. | 14For in the wilderness of Zin when the community rebelled against me, you rebelled against my command to show me as holy before their eyes over the water--the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin." |
So Moses appealed to the LORD," | 15Then Moses spoke to the LORD: |
May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the community | 16"Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all humankind, appoint a man over the community, |
who will go out before them and come back in before them, and who will bring them out and bring them in, so that the LORD's community won't be like sheep without a shepherd." | 17who will go out before them, and who will come in before them, and who will lead them out, and who will bring them in, so that the community of the LORD may not be like sheep that have no shepherd." |
The LORD replied to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. | 18The LORD replied to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is such a spirit, and lay your hand on him; |
Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole community, and commission him in their sight. | 19set him before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community, and commission him publicly. |
Confer some of your authority on him so that the entire Israelite community will obey him. | 20Then you must delegate some of your authority to him, so that the whole community of the Israelites will be obedient. |
He will stand before Eleazar who will consult the LORD for him with the decision of the Urim. He and all the Israelites with him, even the entire community, will go out and come back in at his command." | 21And he will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him before the LORD by the decision of the Urim. At his command they will go out, and at his command they will come in, he and all the Israelites with him, the whole community." |
