Holman Christian Standard BibleInternational Standard Version
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea no longer existed.1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, because the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and the sea was gone.
I also saw the Holy City, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. 2I also saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.
Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look! God's dwelling is with humanity, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. 3I heard a loud voice from the throne say, "See, the tent of God is among humans! He will make his home with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will no longer exist; grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, because the previous things have passed away. 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won't be death anymore. There won't be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared."
Then the One seated on the throne said, "Look! I am making everything new." He also said, "Write, because these words are faithful and true."5The one sitting on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new!" He said, "Write this: 'These words are trustworthy and true.'"
And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give water as a gift to the thirsty from the spring of life.6Then he told me, "It has happened! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give a drink from the spring of the water of life to the one who is thirsty.
The victor will inherit these things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.7The person who conquers will inherit these things. I will be his God, and he will be my son.
But the cowards, unbelievers, vile, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars--their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death." 8But people who are cowardly, unfaithful, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars will find themselves in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death."
Then one of the seven angels, who had held the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues, came and spoke with me: "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." 9Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came to me and said, "Come! I will show you the bride, the wife of the lamb."
He then carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 10He carried me away in the Spirit to a large, high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven.
arrayed with God's glory. Her radiance was like a very precious stone, like a jasper stone, bright as crystal. 11The glory of God was its radiance, and its light was like a valuable gem, like jasper, as clear as crystal.
The city had a massive high wall, with 12 gates. Twelve angels were at the gates; the names of the 12 tribes of Israel's sons were inscribed on the gates.12It had a large, high wall with twelve gates. Twelve angels were at the gates, and the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates.
There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.13There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.
The city wall had 12 foundations, and the 12 names of the Lamb's 12 apostles were on the foundations. 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the lamb were written on them.
The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.15The angel who was talking to me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its walls.
The city is laid out in a square; its length and width are the same. He measured the city with the rod at 12,000 stadia. Its length, width, and height are equal. 16The city was cubic in shape: its length was the same as its width. He measured the city with his rod, and it measured at 12,000 stadia: Its length, width, and height were the same.
Then he measured its wall, 144 cubits according to human measurement, which the angel used. 17He also measured its wall. According to the human measurement that the angel was using, it was 144 cubits.
The building material of its wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold like clear glass. 18Its wall was made of jasper. The city was made of pure gold, as clear as glass.
The foundations of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 19The foundations of the city wall were decorated with all kinds of gems: The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,
the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 20the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth and the twelfth amethyst.
The 12 gates are 12 pearls; each individual gate was made of a single pearl. The broad street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, and each gate was made of a single pearl. The street of the city was made of pure gold, as clear as glass.
I did not see a sanctuary in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its sanctuary. 22I saw no temple in it, because the Lord God Almighty and the lamb are its temple.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because God's glory illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.23The city doesn't need any sun or moon to give it light, because the glory of God gave it light, and the lamb was its lamp.
The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.24The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.
Each day its gates will never close because it will never be night there.25Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day—because there will be no night there.
They will bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.26People will bring the glory and wealth of the nations into it.
Nothing profane will ever enter it: no one who does what is vile or false, but only those written in the Lamb's book of life. 27Nothing unclean, or anyone who does anything detestable, and no one who tells lies will ever enter it. Only those whose names are written in the lamb's Book of Life will enter it.
