English Standard Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, | 1Finally, brothers, pray for us that the Lord's message may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you, |
and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. | 2and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not all have faith. |
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. | 3But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one. |
And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. | 4We have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do what we command. |
May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. | 5May the Lord direct your hearts to God's love and Christ's endurance. |
Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. | 6Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who walks irresponsibly and not according to the tradition received from us. |
For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, | 7For you yourselves know how you must imitate us: We were not irresponsible among you; |
nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. | 8we did not eat anyone's food free of charge; instead, we labored and struggled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. | 9It is not that we don't have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us. |
For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. | 10In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: "If anyone isn't willing to work, he should not eat." |
For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. | 11For we hear that there are some among you who walk irresponsibly, not working at all, but interfering with the work of others. |
Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. | 12Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ that quietly working, they may eat their own food. |
As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. | 13Brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. |
If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. | 14And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don't associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. |
Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. | 15Yet don't treat him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. |
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all. | 16May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. | 17This greeting is in my own hand--Paul. This is a sign in every letter; this is how I write. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. | 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. |
