Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. | 1The daughters of Zelophehad approached; Zelophehad was the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh from the clans of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. These were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. |
And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chiefs and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, | 2They stood before Moses, the priest Eleazar, the leaders, and the entire community at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, |
“Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin. And he had no sons. | 3"Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among Korah's followers, who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons. |
Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.” | 4Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan? Since he had no son, give us property among our father's brothers." |
Moses brought their case before the LORD. | 5Moses brought their case before the LORD, |
And the LORD said to Moses, | 6and the LORD answered him, |
“The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. | 7"What Zelophehad's daughters say is correct. You are to give them hereditary property among their father's brothers and transfer their father's inheritance to them. |
And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. | 8Tell the Israelites: When a man dies without having a son, transfer his inheritance to his daughter. |
And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. | 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. |
And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. | 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. |
And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule, as the LORD commanded Moses.’” | 11If his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative of his clan, and he will take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites as the LORD commanded Moses." |
The LORD said to Moses, “Go up into this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. | 12Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range and see the land that I have given the Israelites. |
When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, | 13After you have seen it, you will also be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was. |
because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) | 14When the community quarreled in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against my command to demonstrate my holiness in their sight at the waters." Those were the Waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin. |
Moses spoke to the LORD, saying, | 15So Moses appealed to the LORD, |
“Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation | 16"May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all, appoint a man over the community |
who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.” | 17who will go out before them and come back in before them, and who will bring them out and bring them in, so that the LORD's community won't be like sheep without a shepherd." |
So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him. | 18The LORD replied to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. |
Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight. | 19Have him stand before the priest Eleazar and the whole community, and commission him in their sight. |
You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. | 20Confer some of your authority on him so that the entire Israelite community will obey him. |
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.” | 21He will stand before the priest Eleazar who will consult the LORD for him with the decision of the Urim. He and all the Israelites with him, even the entire community, will go out and come back in at his command." |
And Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, | 22Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before the priest Eleazar and the entire community, |
and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him as the LORD directed through Moses. | 23laid his hands on him, and commissioned him, as the LORD had spoken through Moses. |
