Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars. | 1Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. |
She has prepared her meat; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. | 2She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. |
She has sent out her female servants; she calls out from the highest points of the city: | 3She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town, |
"Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!" To the one who lacks sense, she says, | 4“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says, |
"Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have mixed. | 5“Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. |
Leave inexperience behind, and you will live; pursue the way of understanding. | 6Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.” |
The one who corrects a mocker will bring abuse on himself; the one who rebukes the wicked will get hurt. | 7Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. |
Don't rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke the wise, and he will love you. | 8Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. |
Instruct the wise, and he will be wiser still; teach the righteous, and he will learn more. | 9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. |
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. | 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. |
For by me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. | 11For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. |
If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit; if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences." | 12If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it. |
Folly is a rowdy woman; she is gullible and knows nothing. | 13The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. |
She sits by the doorway of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, | 14She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places of the town, |
calling to those who pass by, who go straight ahead on their paths: | 15calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, |
"Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!" To the one who lacks sense, she says, | 16“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” And to him who lacks sense she says, |
"Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten secretly is tasty!" | 17“Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” |
But he doesn't know that the departed spirits are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. | 18But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. |
