| 1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of David. After Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the house of Ahimelech.” Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The loving devotion of God endures all day long. | 1For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Doeg the Edomite said to Saul, "David has gone to see Ahimelech." Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? Don't you realize God's justice continues forever? |
| 2Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor, O worker of deceit. | 2All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you're an expert at telling lies. |
| 3You love evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking the truth. Selah | 3You love evil more than good and lies more than truth. Interlude |
| 4You love every word that devours, O deceitful tongue. | 4You love to destroy others with your words, you liar! |
| 5Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent; He will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah | 5But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude |
| 6The righteous will see and fear; they will mock the evildoer, saying, | 6The righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, |
| 7“Look at the man who did not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his wealth, who strengthened himself by bringing destruction.” | 7"Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness." |
| 8But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in the loving devotion of God forever and ever. | 8But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God's unfailing love. |
| 9I will praise You forever, because You have done it. I will wait on Your name—for it is good—in the presence of Your saints. | 9I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name in the presence of your faithful people. |
