For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. | 1For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. |
Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity, | 2Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. |
who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows, | 3They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, |
ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear. | 4in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. |
They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say. | 5They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" |
They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious. | 6They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. |
But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded. | 7But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. |
They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads. | 8Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, |
Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done. | 9and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. |
Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult. | 10The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. |
