“Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble.1"Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil.
Like a flower, he comes forth, then withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure.2"Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain.
Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You?3"You also open Your eyes on him And bring him into judgment with Yourself.
Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one!4"Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one!
Since his days are determined and the number of his months is with You, and since You have set limits that he cannot exceed,5"Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass.
look away from him and let him rest, so he can enjoy his day as a hired hand.6"Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest, Until he fulfills his day like a hired man.
For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail.7"For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail.
If its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the soil,8"Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil,
at the scent of water it will bud and put forth twigs like a sapling.9At the scent of water it will flourish And put forth sprigs like a plant.
But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last, and where is he?10"But man dies and lies prostrate. Man expires, and where is he?
As water disappears from the sea and a river becomes parched and dry,11"As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up,
so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be awakened or roused from sleep.12So man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep.
If only You would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until Your anger has passed! If only You would appoint a time for me and then remember me!13"Oh that You would hide me in Sheol, That You would conceal me until Your wrath returns to You, That You would set a limit for me and remember me!
When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my renewal comes.14"If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my change comes.
You will call, and I will answer; You will desire the work of Your hands.15"You will call, and I will answer You; You will long for the work of Your hands.
For then You would count my steps, but would not keep track of my sin.16"For now You number my steps, You do not observe my sin.
My transgression would be sealed in a bag, and You would cover over my iniquity.17"My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You wrap up my iniquity.
But as a mountain erodes and crumbles and a rock is dislodged from its place,18"But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place;
as water wears away the stones and torrents wash away the soil, so You destroy a man’s hope.19Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You destroy man's hope.
You forever overpower him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away.20"You forever overpower him and he departs; You change his appearance and send him away.
If his sons receive honor, he does not know it; if they are brought low, he is unaware.21"His sons achieve honor, but he does not know it; Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.
He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”22"But his body pains him, And he mourns only for himself."
