Psalm 49
BSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Berean Study BibleEnglish Standard Version
For the choirmaster. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all inhabitants of the world,1Hear this, all peoples! Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
both low and high, rich and poor alike.2both low and high, rich and poor together!
My mouth will impart wisdom, and the meditation of my heart will bring understanding.3My mouth shall speak wisdom; the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.
I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle with the harp:4I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.
Why should I fear in times of trouble, when wicked usurpers surround me?5Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,
They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.6those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?
No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom to God.7Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life,
For the redemption of his soul is costly, and never can payment suffice,8for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice,
that he should live on forever and not see decay.9that he should live on forever and never see the pit.
For it is clear that wise men die, and the foolish and the senseless both perish and leave their wealth to others.10For he sees that even the wise die; the fool and the stupid alike must perish and leave their wealth to others.
Their graves are their eternal homes—their dwellings for endless generations—even though their lands were their namesakes.11Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they called lands by their own names.
But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure; he is like the beasts that perish.12Man in his pomp will not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.
This is the fate of the self-confident and their followers who endorse their sayings. Selah13This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah
Like sheep they are destined for Sheol. Death will be their shepherd. The upright will rule them in the morning, and their form will decay in Sheol, far from their lofty abode.14Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; death shall be their shepherd, and the upright shall rule over them in the morning. Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell.
But God will redeem my life from Sheol, for He will surely take me to Himself. Selah15But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah
Do not be amazed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases.16Be not afraid when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases.
For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down.17For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him.
Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul—and men praise you when you prosper—18For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed—and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—
he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of day.19his soul will go to the generation of his fathers, who will never again see light.
A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.20Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
