Parallel Chapters A Call to Rebuild the Temple
(Ezra 5:1-5) 1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest: | 1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: | 1In the second year of Darius the king, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, | 1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying, | 1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:" |
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "These people say, 'The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD's house.'" | 2“Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.” | 2"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'This people says, "The time has not come, even the time for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt."'" | 2Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built. | 2The LORD of Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt." |
Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: | 3Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, | 3Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, | 3Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, | 3The word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet: " |
"Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?" | 4“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? | 4"Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?" | 4Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? | 4Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?" |
Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. | 5Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. | 5Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, "Consider your ways! | 5Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. | 5Now, the LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways: |
You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it." | 6You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. | 6"You have sown much, but harvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is not enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes." | 6Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. | 6You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to become drunk. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it." |
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. | 7“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. | 7Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Consider your ways! | 7Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. | 7The LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways. |
Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored," says the LORD. | 8Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. | 8"Go up to the mountains, bring wood and rebuild the temple, that I may be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD. | 8Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. | 8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD." |
"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. | 9You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. | 9"You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I blow it away. Why?" declares the LORD of hosts, "Because of My house which lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house. | 9Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house. | 9You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?" This is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. "Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house. |
Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. | 10Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. | 10"Therefore, because of you the sky has withheld its dew and the earth has withheld its produce. | 10Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. | 10So on your account, the skies have withheld the dew and the land its crops. |
I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands." | 11And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.” | 11"I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands." | 11And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands. | 11I have summoned a drought on the fields and the hills, on the grain, new wine, olive oil, and whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all that your hands produce." |
The People Obey 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence for the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD. |
Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: "I am with you," declares the LORD. | 13Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.” | 13Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke by the commission of the LORD to the people saying, "'I am with you,' declares the LORD." | 13Then spake Haggai the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD. | 13Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people, "I am with you"--this is the LORD's declaration. |
So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God, | 14And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, | 14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, | 14And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, | 14The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God, |
