Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley (winter stream, flowing in winter, latin-torrentem-brook), where there was a garden, into which He and His disciples entered.
And Judas, who was betraying Him, also knew the place because Jesus gathered together there often with His disciples.
Therefore Judas having taken the cohort, and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Jesus therefore knowing all things that were coming upon Him, having gone out and said to them, Whom do you seek?
They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. He says to them, I am [He]. And Judas also, who was delivering Him up (betrayed Him) had been standing with them.
When therefore He said to them, I am [He], they drew back and fell to the ground.
Again then He questioned them, Whom do you seek? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am [He]. Therefore if you seek Me, allow these to go away;
So that the word might be fulfilled that He had spoken, Those whom You have given Me, I have not lost one of them.
Then Simon Peter having a sword (short sword or dagger), drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear and the servant’s name was Malchus.
Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it? 12Then the cohort and the commander, and the officers of the Jews took hold of Jesus and bound Him; 13And they led Him away to Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that same year. 14However Caiaphas was the one having given consultation to the Jews that is was beneficial for one man to perish for the sake of the people. 15And Simon Peter and the other disciple were following, and since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest. 16However Peter stood at the door outside. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought in Peter. 17Therefore the servant girl, the doorkeeper, says to Peter, Are you not also from out of the disciples of this man? He says, I am not. 18And the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals because it was cold and were warming themselves. And Peter was also with them standing and warming himself. 19Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching. 20Jesus answered him, I have openly spoken to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple where the Jews always come together and I spoke nothing in secret. 21Why do you question Me? Question those having heard what I spoke to them; behold, they know what I said. 22And having said these things of Him, one of the officers standing by gave a blow (slap) with the palm to Jesus, having said, Answer You the high priest thus? 23Jesus answered him, If I spoke wrong (kakos), bear witness concerning the wrong; however if rightly (kalos), why do you strike Me? 24Annas then sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They then said to him, Are you not also from out of His disciples? He denied and said, I am not. 26One of the servants of the high priest, being kinsman of him of whom Peter had cut off the ear, says, Did I not see you in the garden with Him? 27Peter then again denied and directly (at once) a rooster crowed (called out). 28Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. And it was early in the morning. And they did not enter into the praetorium so that they should not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29Pilate then went outside to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this man? 30They answered and said to him, If He were not doing wrong (kakon, latin-malefactor), we would not have delivered Him to you. 31Pilate then said to them, Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law. The Jews said to him, It is not permitted for us to put anyone to death; 32So that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that He had spoken signifying what death He was about to die. 33Pilate then entered again into the praetorium, and called Jesus and said to Him, Are You the king of the Jews? 34Jesus answered, Do you say this from yourself or did others say it to you about Me? 35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your ethnicity (nation) and the chief priests delivered You to me. What have You done? 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from out of this world; if My kingdom were from out of this world, My attendants would fight so that I might not be betrayed to the Jews. However now My kingdom is not from here. 37Pilate then said to Him, Then are You a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. Unto this I have been born and unto this I have come into the world, so that I might bear witness to the truth. Everyone being of the truth hears My voice. 38Pilate says to Him, What is truth? And having said this again he went out to the Jews and says to them, I find no cause (fault, reason) in Him. 39And it is a custom with you that I should release one to you at the Passover; Therefore do you determine that I should release to you the King of the Jews? 40They cried out then again saying, Not this one, but Barabbas! And Barabbas was a robber (thief in the open typically with violence). |
