2 Timothy 1
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus,

2To Timothy my beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I have remembrance of you in my heart-felt petition night and day, longing to see you, remembering your tears, so that I might be filled with joy;

3I have gratitude to God whom I serve (serve because hired because qualified) from my forefathers (those born before, ancestors, parents) in a pure (purged clean and unmixed, latin-pura) conscience, like as unceasingly 4I have remembrance of you in my heart-felt petition night and day, longing to see you, remembering your tears, so that I might be filled with joy; 5Having taken remembrance of the sincere (unfeigned, not phony, not acting as a hypocrite, latin- non ficta like non fictional) faith in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother, Eunice; and I am persuaded (latin-certus-definite like certified root is sure) that it is also in you.

6Because of that reason I remind you to fire up (greek- anazopyrein- ana-up-again zoon-living creature pyr-fire, up the living fire, latin-resuscites-stir like resuscitate) the gift (charisma- grace-gift) of God, which is in you through the laying upon (latin- inpositionem-laying like imposition) of my hands. 7For God has not given us a spirit of timidity (greek is deilias not phobos- it is not fear here rather cowardice, latin-timoris like timidity), but rather of power (ability, might) and of love and of a sound perspective (greek- sophronismou- safe/sound/sensible moderated/regulated/balanced perspective/outlook/mind).

8Therefore, you should not be ashamed of (disgraced upon) the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner; but rather suffer together (suffer hardships together with) for the gospel according to the power (ability, might) of God; 9The One having saved us and having called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but rather according to His own pre-purpose (predetermination, purposefully set forth before, latin-propositum-purpose like proposition) and grace, having been given us in Christ Jesus before the times of the ages; 10And having been made apparent now through the appearing upon of our Savior, Christ Jesus, having abolished (brought to naught, annulled, rendered inoperative) death, and having brought to light (enlightened) life and immortality through the gospel; 11Unto which I was appointed a preacher (herald, proclaimer) and an apostle and a teacher. 12Because of this reason I also suffer these things. But rather I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am persuaded (latin- certus-definite root is sure) that He is able (powerful) to guard my entrustment to Him unto that yonder day.

13Hold the pattern of healthy words which you did hear from me in faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good entrustment to you through the Holy Spirit indwelling in us.

15You know this, that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16May the Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, because he refreshed (bring cooling, to cool by blowing, latin- refrigeravit-refresh root is cools) and he was not ashamed of my chain; 17But rather having arrived in Rome, he quickly sought me out and found me. 18May the Lord give unto him to find mercy from the Lord in that yonder day! And you know very well, how much he ministered (diekonesen) in Ephesus.
