Wisdom as a Divine Attribute

Introduction

Wisdom, as a divine attribute, is a central theme throughout the Bible, reflecting the nature and character of God. It is not merely an abstract concept but is personified and manifested in God's creation, revelation, and redemptive work. The Bible presents wisdom as an essential quality of God, integral to His being and actions.

Old Testament Foundations

In the Old Testament, wisdom is often associated with God's creative power and His governance of the world. Proverbs 3:19-20 states, "The LORD founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding. By His knowledge the watery depths were broken open, and the clouds dripped with dew." Here, wisdom is depicted as the means by which God ordered the universe, highlighting its foundational role in creation.

The Book of Job also emphasizes divine wisdom, particularly in God's response to Job. In Job 28:23-28 , it is written, "But God understands its way, and He knows its place. For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. When He fixed the weight of the wind and measured out the waters, when He set a limit for the rain and a path for the thunderbolt, then He looked at wisdom and appraised it; He established it and searched it out. And He said to man, 'The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.'"

Wisdom Literature

The wisdom literature of the Old Testament, including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job, explores the nature of wisdom as both a divine attribute and a human pursuit. Proverbs 9:10 declares, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This verse underscores the belief that true wisdom originates from a reverent relationship with God.

In Ecclesiastes, the limitations of human wisdom are contrasted with the infinite wisdom of God. Ecclesiastes 3:11 states, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work God has done from beginning to end." This passage reflects the mystery and depth of divine wisdom, which surpasses human comprehension.

Personification of Wisdom

In Proverbs 8, wisdom is personified as a woman who calls out to humanity, inviting them to embrace her. Proverbs 8:22-31 presents wisdom as a participant in creation: "The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His work, before His deeds of old. From everlasting I was established, from the beginning, before the earth began... Then I was a skilled craftsman at His side, and His delight day by day, rejoicing always in His presence." This personification highlights the intimate relationship between God and wisdom, portraying it as an active and eternal aspect of His nature.

New Testament Revelation

In the New Testament, the personification of wisdom finds its ultimate expression in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul identifies Christ as the embodiment of divine wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:24 , Paul writes, "But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." This identification underscores the belief that Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God's wisdom, fulfilling the Old Testament anticipation of wisdom's role in God's redemptive plan.

Colossians 2:2-3 further affirms this, stating, "My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Here, Christ is presented as the repository of divine wisdom, offering believers access to the fullness of God's understanding.

Practical Implications

The divine attribute of wisdom has practical implications for believers. James 1:5 encourages Christians to seek wisdom from God: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." This promise assures believers that divine wisdom is accessible through prayer and faith.

Furthermore, the pursuit of wisdom is linked to righteous living. James 3:17 describes the characteristics of heavenly wisdom: "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere." This passage outlines the ethical dimensions of divine wisdom, emphasizing its transformative impact on the believer's life.
