Wisdom

In the biblical context, wisdom is more than mere knowledge or intelligence; it is the ability to apply knowledge in a godly manner. The Bible frequently associates wisdom with the fear of the Lord, suggesting that true wisdom begins with a reverent relationship with God. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

The Old Testament often personifies wisdom as a woman calling out to those who pass by, urging them to embrace her teachings (Proverbs 1:20-23). Wisdom is portrayed as a divine attribute, present at the creation of the world (Proverbs 8:22-31). Solomon, known for his wisdom, is a key figure in the Bible who exemplifies the value of wisdom. When God offered him anything he desired, Solomon chose wisdom to govern the people effectively (1 Kings 3:5-12).

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is seen as the embodiment of divine wisdom. The Apostle Paul refers to Christ as "the power of God and the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24). James 1:5 encourages believers to seek wisdom from God: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Counsel

Counsel in the Bible refers to guidance or advice, often sought from God or godly individuals. The importance of seeking wise counsel is emphasized throughout Scripture. Proverbs 11:14 states, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety." This highlights the value of collective wisdom and the dangers of isolation in decision-making.

God is depicted as the ultimate counselor. Isaiah 9:6 refers to the coming Messiah as "Wonderful Counselor," indicating that Jesus provides perfect guidance. The Holy Spirit is also described as a counselor or helper, guiding believers into all truth (John 14:26).

The Bible warns against ungodly counsel, as seen in Psalm 1:1 : "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers." This verse underscores the importance of discerning the source of counsel and aligning it with God's Word.

In the early church, the apostles and elders provided counsel to the believers, as seen in the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15). Their decisions, guided by the Holy Spirit, helped shape the early Christian community and resolve doctrinal disputes.
