Wisdom

In the biblical context, wisdom is more than mere knowledge or intelligence; it is the practical application of knowledge guided by a deep reverence for God. The Hebrew word for wisdom, "chokmah," encompasses skill in living, moral insight, and the ability to make godly choices. The Bible presents wisdom as a divine attribute and a gift from God, essential for righteous living.

The Book of Proverbs is a central text in the Bible concerning wisdom. Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." This verse underscores the foundational principle that true wisdom begins with a reverent fear of the Lord. Proverbs 3:13-18 extols the virtues of wisdom, describing it as more precious than rubies and a source of long life, riches, and honor.

King Solomon is often associated with wisdom. In 1 Kings 3:9-12 , Solomon famously asks God for "an understanding heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil." Pleased with this request, God grants Solomon unparalleled wisdom, making him renowned throughout the ancient world.

The New Testament also emphasizes wisdom, particularly in the teachings of Jesus and the writings of the apostles. James 1:5 encourages believers, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." This promise highlights the accessibility of divine wisdom to those who seek it earnestly.

Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship in the Bible is often linked to the divine inspiration and skill bestowed upon individuals for the purpose of fulfilling God's plans. The construction of the Tabernacle and the Temple are prime examples where craftsmanship is highlighted as a divinely endowed skill.

In Exodus 31:1-5 , God appoints Bezalel, saying, "See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in all kinds of craftsmanship." Bezalel, along with Oholiab, is tasked with crafting the intricate designs of the Tabernacle, demonstrating that craftsmanship is not merely a human endeavor but a spiritual calling.

The construction of Solomon's Temple further illustrates the importance of skilled craftsmanship. In 1 Kings 7:13-14 , Hiram of Tyre, a man "filled with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to do all kinds of bronze work," is brought to assist in the Temple's construction. His expertise in bronze work is seen as a vital contribution to the sacred project.

The New Testament also acknowledges the value of craftsmanship. The Apostle Paul, a tentmaker by trade, exemplifies the integration of skilled labor with ministry. Acts 18:3 notes that Paul "stayed and worked with them, for they were tentmakers by trade." This reference highlights the dignity and importance of skilled work in the life of a believer.
