Topical Encyclopedia IntroductionUzziah, also known as Azariah, was a king of Judah whose reign is noted for its prosperity and military success. His account is primarily found in 2 Kings 15 and 2 Chronicles 26. Uzziah's ascent to the throne and his subsequent achievements are significant in the history of Judah, reflecting both divine favor and the consequences of pride. Background and Ascension Uzziah was the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, and his mother was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. He became king at the age of sixteen after the people of Judah made him king following the assassination of his father. His reign is recorded to have lasted for fifty-two years, making it one of the longest in the history of the divided kingdom. Biblical Account The account of Uzziah's rise to power is succinctly captured in 2 Kings 15:1-3 : "In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam’s reign over Israel, Azariah son of Amaziah became king of Judah. He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem. And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done." 2 Chronicles 26 provides a more detailed account of Uzziah's reign, highlighting his accomplishments and the divine favor he enjoyed. It notes that Uzziah sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success (2 Chronicles 26:5). Military and Economic Achievements Uzziah's reign was marked by significant military and economic achievements. He fortified Jerusalem, built towers, and equipped his army with advanced weaponry. His military campaigns extended Judah's influence and secured its borders. 2 Chronicles 26:6-8 states, "Uzziah went out to wage war against the Philistines. He tore down the walls of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod. Then he built cities in the vicinity of Ashdod and among the Philistines. God helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabs who lived in Gur-baal, and against the Meunites. The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he had become exceedingly powerful." Economically, Uzziah's reign was prosperous. He developed agriculture, dug many wells, and had much livestock. His love for the soil and his efforts in agriculture are noted in 2 Chronicles 26:10 : "He built towers in the wilderness and dug many cisterns, because he had much livestock in the foothills and in the plain. He had farmers and vinedressers in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil." Religious Observance and Pride Uzziah's early reign was characterized by religious observance and adherence to the ways of the LORD. However, as his power grew, so did his pride, leading to his downfall. 2 Chronicles 26:16 records, "But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense." This act of presumption, attempting to perform priestly duties, was met with divine judgment. Uzziah was struck with leprosy, which remained with him until his death. He lived in a separate house, and his son Jotham governed the people in his stead. Legacy Uzziah's reign is a testament to the blessings of seeking the LORD and the dangers of pride. His achievements in military and economic spheres were significant, yet his life serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of overstepping divine boundaries. His account is a reminder of the importance of humility and obedience to God's commands.
