Unlikely Alliances Against Truth

Throughout the biblical narrative, there are instances where unlikely alliances form in opposition to the truth of God's word and His purposes. These alliances often consist of individuals or groups who, under normal circumstances, would be adversaries or have conflicting interests. However, when faced with the threat of divine truth or the advancement of God's kingdom, they unite in their opposition. This phenomenon underscores the pervasive nature of spiritual warfare and the lengths to which opposition to God's truth will go.

1. The Alliance of Herod and Pilate

One of the most notable examples of an unlikely alliance against truth is the collaboration between Herod Antipas and Pontius Pilate during the trial of Jesus Christ. Herod and Pilate were political figures with distinct jurisdictions and had previously been at odds with each other. However, the trial of Jesus brought them together in a shared purpose. Luke 23:12 states, "That day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this time they had been enemies." Their newfound alliance was forged in the context of their mutual involvement in the unjust trial and condemnation of Jesus, the embodiment of truth (John 14:6).

2. The Pharisees and the Herodians

Another example is the collaboration between the Pharisees and the Herodians. The Pharisees were a religious group committed to strict adherence to Jewish law, while the Herodians were a political group that supported the Herodian dynasty and, by extension, Roman rule. Despite their differing ideologies, they united in their opposition to Jesus. In Mark 3:6 , it is recorded, "At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus." Their alliance was driven by a shared desire to eliminate the threat that Jesus posed to their respective positions of power and influence.

3. The Sanhedrin and False Witnesses

The trial of Jesus also involved the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, which sought false witnesses to testify against Him. In Mark 14:55-56 , it is noted, "Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any. For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimony was inconsistent." The Sanhedrin's willingness to rely on false testimony highlights the extent to which they were prepared to go in their opposition to the truth that Jesus represented.

4. The Alliance of Nations Against Israel

In the Old Testament, there are instances where nations formed alliances against Israel, God's chosen people, in an attempt to thwart His plans. Psalm 83:5-8 describes such an alliance: "For with one mind they plot together, they form an alliance against You—the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, of Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, of Philistia with the people of Tyre. Even Assyria has joined them, lending strength to the sons of Lot." These alliances were often motivated by a desire to destroy Israel and, by extension, oppose God's covenant promises.

5. The End Times Coalition

Prophetic scriptures also speak of future alliances against God's truth and His people. Revelation 17:12-14 describes a coalition of ten kings who will give their power and authority to the beast in opposition to the Lamb: "The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but will receive one hour of authority as kings along with the beast. These kings have one purpose: to yield their power and authority to the beast. They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and He will be accompanied by His called and chosen and faithful ones."

These examples illustrate the recurring theme of unlikely alliances forming in opposition to divine truth. Whether motivated by political expediency, religious zeal, or outright rebellion against God, these alliances serve as a reminder of the spiritual battle that rages against the truth of God's word and His redemptive purposes in the world.
