Introduction:
Timnath-heres, also known as Timnath-serah, is a significant location in biblical history, primarily noted as the inheritance and burial site of Joshua, the son of Nun, who succeeded Moses as the leader of the Israelites. This entry explores the biblical references and historical context of Timnath-heres, drawing from the Berean Standard Bible for scriptural citations.

Biblical References:
Timnath-heres is mentioned in the Book of Joshua and the Book of Judges. In Joshua 19:49-50 , it is recorded: "When they had finished distributing the land into its territories, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city he asked for—Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. And he built up the city and settled there." This passage highlights the allocation of Timnath-serah to Joshua as a reward for his faithful service and leadership.

The name Timnath-heres appears in Judges 2:9 , which states: "And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash." This verse confirms the location as Joshua's final resting place, emphasizing its importance as a site of remembrance for the Israelites.

Etymology and Location:
The name Timnath-heres is believed to mean "portion of the sun" or "abundant portion," reflecting the region's fertility and significance. The alternative name, Timnath-serah, is thought to mean "portion of abundance." The site is located in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash, which situates it within the central highlands of ancient Israel.

Historical and Theological Significance:
Timnath-heres holds considerable historical and theological importance. As the inheritance of Joshua, it symbolizes the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites regarding the distribution of the Promised Land. Joshua's leadership was instrumental in the conquest and settlement of Canaan, and his burial at Timnath-heres marks the end of an era of divine guidance through a faithful servant.

Theologically, Timnath-heres serves as a testament to God's faithfulness and the rewards of obedience. Joshua's life and legacy are celebrated for his unwavering commitment to God's commands, and his inheritance at Timnath-heres is a tangible representation of divine blessing.

Archaeological Insights:
While the exact location of Timnath-heres remains a subject of scholarly debate, it is generally associated with the modern site of Khirbet Tibnah. Archaeological surveys in the region have uncovered remains that suggest a settlement existed during the period of the Judges, aligning with the biblical narrative.

Conclusion:
Timnath-heres, as the inheritance and burial site of Joshua, holds a place of honor in biblical history. It represents the culmination of Joshua's leadership and the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites. Through its biblical references and historical context, Timnath-heres continues to be a symbol of faithfulness and divine reward.

TIMNATH-HERES

tim-nath-he'rez (timnath cherec, "portion of the sun"; Codex Vaticanus Thamnathares; Codex Alexandrinus Thamnathar; heos): This is the form of the name given to Joshua's property and place of burial in Judges 2:9. The name in Joshua 19:50; Joshua 24:30 is Timnath-serah. "Serah" simply reverses the order of the letters in "Heres." Scholars are divided in opinion as to which form is correct. It is possible that the change from Heres to Serah may have been deliberate, in order to avoid a form which might savor of idolatry-sun-worship. The Jews and Samaritans hold that Heres is the original form.
