The Works of the Father

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of "The Works of the Father" in the Bible refers to the actions and deeds performed by God the Father, as well as the works He accomplishes through His creation and His people. These works are a testament to His power, wisdom, and divine nature, and they are evident throughout the Scriptures.

Creation
The foundational work of the Father is the creation of the universe. Genesis 1:1 states, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." This act of creation is a demonstration of His omnipotence and sovereignty. The Father’s creative work is further affirmed in passages such as Psalm 19:1, which declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands."

Sustenance and Providence
The Father not only created the world but also sustains it. Hebrews 1:3 speaks of the Son, "sustaining all things by His powerful word," indicating the ongoing work of the Father through the Son. God's providential care is evident in Matthew 6:26, where Jesus teaches, "Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them."

Redemption
The work of redemption is central to the Father’s plan for humanity. John 3:16 reveals the Father’s love and redemptive purpose: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." The Father’s work in redemption is also seen in Ephesians 1:7-10, where Paul writes about the Father’s plan to bring all things together in Christ.

Judgment
The Father’s works include acts of judgment, which are expressions of His holiness and justice. In the Old Testament, God’s judgments are seen in events such as the flood (Genesis 6-9) and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19). In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of the Father’s role in judgment in John 5:22: "Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son."

Revelation
The Father reveals Himself and His will through His works. Romans 1:20 states, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse." The Scriptures themselves are a work of the Father, inspired by the Holy Spirit, to reveal His character and purposes.

Works Through Believers
The Father also works through His people to accomplish His purposes on earth. Ephesians 2:10 declares, "For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life." Believers are called to be instruments of the Father’s work, reflecting His love and truth in the world.

Miracles and Signs
Throughout the Bible, the Father’s works are often manifested through miracles and signs. These acts serve to authenticate His messengers and reveal His power. In the ministry of Jesus, the works of the Father are evident in the miracles He performed, as Jesus Himself states in John 14:10, "The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works."

The works of the Father are vast and multifaceted, encompassing creation, sustenance, redemption, judgment, revelation, and His ongoing activity through believers and miraculous signs. These works reveal His character and invite humanity to respond in faith and obedience.
