The Works of the Flesh

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of "The Works of the Flesh" is primarily derived from the Apostle Paul's epistle to the Galatians, where he contrasts the sinful nature of humanity with the fruit of the Spirit. In Galatians 5:19-21 , Paul provides a comprehensive list of behaviors and attitudes that characterize the works of the flesh: "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Sexual Immorality, Impurity, and Debauchery

These terms encompass a range of sexual sins that deviate from the biblical standard of sexual relations within the confines of marriage between one man and one woman. Sexual immorality (Greek: porneia) includes adultery, fornication, and other illicit sexual activities. Impurity (Greek: akatharsia) refers to moral uncleanness in thought and action, while debauchery (Greek: aselgeia) indicates a lack of restraint and indulgence in sensual pleasures.

Idolatry and Sorcery

Idolatry involves the worship of false gods or the elevation of anything above the one true God. It is a direct violation of the first commandment (Exodus 20:3). Sorcery (Greek: pharmakeia) refers to the use of magic, witchcraft, or the invocation of evil spirits, often associated with the use of drugs or potions to alter consciousness or manipulate outcomes.

Hatred, Discord, Jealousy, and Rage

These works of the flesh pertain to interpersonal relationships and attitudes that disrupt harmony and peace. Hatred (Greek: echthra) is an intense hostility towards others. Discord (Greek: eris) involves strife and contention, while jealousy (Greek: zelos) is the resentment of others' success or possessions. Rage (Greek: thumos) is uncontrolled anger that leads to destructive behavior.

Rivalries, Divisions, Factions, and Envy

Rivalries (Greek: eritheia) are selfish ambitions that prioritize personal gain over communal well-being. Divisions (Greek: dichostasia) and factions (Greek: hairesis) refer to the creation of schisms within the community, often based on doctrinal or personal disagreements. Envy (Greek: phthonos) is the desire for what others have, leading to resentment and bitterness.

Drunkenness and Orgies

Drunkenness (Greek: methe) is the excessive consumption of alcohol, leading to a loss of self-control and moral judgment. Orgies (Greek: komos) refer to wild, uninhibited parties characterized by excessive drinking and immoral behavior.

Theological Implications

The works of the flesh are indicative of a life lived apart from the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit. They represent the fallen nature of humanity and the propensity to sin that exists within every individual. Paul warns that those who habitually practice such behaviors will not inherit the kingdom of God, emphasizing the need for repentance and transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Practical Application

Believers are called to crucify the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24) and to walk by the Spirit, producing the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. This involves a conscious decision to reject the works of the flesh and to pursue holiness, righteousness, and love in accordance with God's will.
