Topical Encyclopedia Messiah and SaviorChrist Jesus, central to Christian theology, is recognized as the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament and the Savior of humanity. The term "Messiah" means "Anointed One," and Jesus fulfills this role as the one chosen by God to bring salvation. In the New Testament, Jesus explicitly identifies Himself as the Messiah, as seen in John 4:25-26: "The woman said, 'I know that Messiah' (called Christ) 'is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.' Jesus answered, 'I who speak to you am He.'" Divine Sonship Jesus is acknowledged as the Son of God, a title that signifies His unique relationship with the Father and His divine nature. This is affirmed in passages such as Matthew 3:17, where God declares, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." His divine sonship is foundational to His authority and mission, as He embodies the fullness of God in human form (Colossians 2:9). Mediator and High Priest As the mediator between God and humanity, Jesus bridges the gap caused by sin. 1 Timothy 2:5 states, "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." His role as High Priest is elaborated in the book of Hebrews, where He is described as offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin, once and for all (Hebrews 7:27). This priestly function underscores His intercessory work on behalf of believers. Prophet, Priest, and King Jesus fulfills the threefold office of prophet, priest, and king. As a prophet, He reveals God's will and truth, teaching with authority and fulfilling the prophecies of old (Deuteronomy 18:15; Matthew 21:11). As a priest, He offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice, reconciling humanity to God. As a king, He reigns with authority over all creation, a kingship affirmed in Revelation 19:16: "On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." Redeemer and Atonement Central to Jesus' role is His work of redemption and atonement. Through His death and resurrection, He redeems humanity from the bondage of sin and death. Romans 3:24-25 explains, "and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God presented Him as the atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood." His sacrificial death satisfies the justice of God, providing a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him. Teacher and Shepherd Jesus is also recognized as a teacher and shepherd. His teachings, encapsulated in the Gospels, provide moral and spiritual guidance. He is the Good Shepherd who cares for His flock, as described in John 10:11: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." His role as shepherd emphasizes His care, guidance, and protection of believers. Judge and Coming King In eschatological terms, Jesus is the appointed judge of the living and the dead. Acts 10:42 states, "He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that He is the one appointed by God to judge the living and the dead." His return is anticipated as the culmination of His redemptive work, where He will establish His eternal kingdom and execute divine justice. Source of Eternal Life Finally, Jesus is the source of eternal life for all who believe in Him. John 3:16, one of the most well-known verses, declares, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." This promise of eternal life is central to the Christian faith, offering hope and assurance of salvation through Christ Jesus. |
