The Purpose of Jesus' Coming

The purpose of Jesus Christ's coming into the world is a central theme in Christian theology, deeply rooted in the narrative of the Bible. His incarnation, life, death, and resurrection are seen as the fulfillment of divine prophecy and the ultimate expression of God's love and redemption plan for humanity.

Fulfillment of Prophecy

The coming of Jesus was foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament, who spoke of a Messiah who would deliver God's people. Isaiah prophesied, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14). This prophecy is echoed in the New Testament, where Matthew identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of this promise (Matthew 1:22-23).

Revelation of God

Jesus came to reveal the nature and character of God to humanity. In the Gospel of John, Jesus declares, "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). Through His teachings, miracles, and interactions, Jesus provided a tangible representation of God's love, holiness, and mercy.

Salvation and Redemption

Central to Jesus' mission was the salvation of humanity from sin. The angel announced to Joseph, "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross is viewed as the atonement for sin, fulfilling the requirements of divine justice and offering redemption to all who believe. As Paul writes, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace" (Ephesians 1:7).

Establishment of the Kingdom of God

Jesus proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of God, a central theme of His teaching. He began His ministry with the message, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel" (Mark 1:15). Through parables and teachings, Jesus described a kingdom characterized by righteousness, peace, and justice, inviting all to enter through faith and repentance.

Demonstration of Perfect Obedience

Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to the Father, serving as the model for human conduct. His obedience is highlighted in Philippians: "And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:8). This obedience not only fulfilled the law but also provided a pattern for believers to follow.

Defeat of Evil

The coming of Jesus also signified the defeat of evil and the powers of darkness. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus triumphed over sin, death, and Satan. As stated in 1 John, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil" (1 John 3:8). This victory assures believers of their ultimate triumph over evil through Christ.

Reconciliation of Humanity to God

Jesus' mission was to reconcile humanity to God, restoring the broken relationship caused by sin. Paul writes, "For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross" (Colossians 1:19-20). This reconciliation is available to all who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Provision of Eternal Life

Finally, Jesus came to offer eternal life to those who believe in Him. In His conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus stated, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). This promise of eternal life is a cornerstone of Christian hope and faith, assuring believers of their future with God.
