The Purpose of Barriers

In the biblical narrative, barriers serve as both physical and metaphorical constructs that delineate, protect, and instruct. They are divinely instituted or allowed to fulfill God's purposes, guiding His people and shaping their spiritual journey.

1. Barriers as Protection

Barriers often serve as protective measures, safeguarding individuals or groups from harm. In Genesis 3:24, after Adam and Eve's disobedience, God places cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life, preventing humanity from accessing it in their fallen state: "So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden, with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life" . This barrier underscores God's mercy, preventing eternal separation from Him by living forever in sin.

Similarly, the walls of Jerusalem, as described in Nehemiah, serve as a physical barrier to protect the inhabitants from external threats. Nehemiah 4:6-9 illustrates the importance of these walls: "So we rebuilt the wall until all of it was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were furious. And all of them conspired to come and fight against Jerusalem and create a hindrance. So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night" .

2. Barriers as Separation

Barriers also serve to separate the holy from the profane, emphasizing God's holiness and the need for purity among His people. The veil in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple is a prime example. It separated the Holy of Holies, where God's presence dwelt, from the rest of the sanctuary. Exodus 26:33 states, "Hang the veil from the clasps, and place the ark of the Testimony behind the veil. The veil will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place" . This barrier signified the separation between God and humanity due to sin, a separation ultimately bridged by Christ's sacrifice, as indicated in Matthew 27:51: "At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom" .

3. Barriers as Instruction

Barriers can also serve as instructional tools, teaching obedience and dependence on God. The Israelites' journey through the wilderness is marked by barriers that test and refine their faith. The Red Sea, initially a barrier to escape from Egypt, becomes a means of deliverance when God parts it, as recorded in Exodus 14:21-22: "Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. So the waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left" .

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul speaks of a "thorn in the flesh," a personal barrier that serves to keep him humble and reliant on God's grace. In 2 Corinthians 12:7-9, Paul writes, "To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness'" .

4. Barriers as Opportunities for Faith

Barriers often present opportunities for the demonstration of faith and trust in God's provision. The walls of Jericho, a formidable barrier to the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land, fall not by human might but by obedience to God's unconventional command. Joshua 6:20 recounts, "When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city" .

In the Gospels, Jesus frequently encounters barriers in the form of societal norms and physical limitations, which He overcomes to demonstrate His divine authority and compassion. In Mark 2:4-5, friends of a paralytic man remove the roof above Jesus to lower him down, overcoming the barrier of the crowd: "Since they were unable to get to Jesus because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, 'Son, your sins are forgiven'" .

Throughout Scripture, barriers are multifaceted tools used by God to protect, separate, instruct, and test His people, ultimately pointing them toward a deeper relationship with Him.
