The Offense of Truth

The concept of "The Offense of Truth" in the Bible refers to the idea that the truth of God's Word and the message of the Gospel can be offensive to those who do not believe or who are living in opposition to God's commandments. This offense is not due to any flaw in the truth itself but rather in the human heart's resistance to it.

Biblical Foundation

The Apostle Paul addresses the offense of the Gospel in several of his epistles. In 1 Corinthians 1:18, Paul writes, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Here, Paul acknowledges that the truth of the Gospel, centered on the crucifixion of Christ, is perceived as foolishness and thus offensive to those who reject it.

Similarly, in Galatians 5:11, Paul speaks of the "offense of the cross," indicating that the message of salvation through Christ alone was a stumbling block to those who clung to the law or other means of justification. The cross, as a symbol of sacrifice and redemption, challenges human pride and self-sufficiency, leading to its rejection by many.

Jesus and the Offense of Truth

Jesus Himself was aware of the offense His teachings would cause. In John 6:60-61, after delivering a difficult teaching, many of His disciples said, "This is a difficult statement; who can accept it?" Jesus, knowing their grumbling, asked, "Does this offend you?" His teachings often confronted the religious leaders and the societal norms of His time, leading to division and hostility.

In Matthew 11:6, Jesus states, "Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me." This beatitude highlights the potential for offense in His message and the blessing for those who accept it despite its challenges.

The Prophets and the Offense of Truth

The Old Testament prophets also experienced the offense of truth. Jeremiah, known as the "weeping prophet," faced significant opposition and persecution for delivering God's messages of judgment and repentance. In Jeremiah 20:8-9, he laments, "For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim violence and destruction. For the word of the LORD has become to me a reproach and derision all day long."

Similarly, Isaiah was called to a ministry where his message would be largely rejected. In Isaiah 6:9-10, God tells him, "Go and tell this people: 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.' Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears and close their eyes."

The Believer's Response

Believers are called to uphold the truth of the Gospel, even when it is offensive to the world. In 2 Timothy 4:2-4, Paul exhorts Timothy to "preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine."

The believer's task is to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), understanding that the offense of truth is not a reflection of their failure but a fulfillment of the prophetic and apostolic witness. Jesus warned His followers in John 15:18-19, "If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world."

Conclusion

The offense of truth is an inherent aspect of the Christian faith, as the message of the Gospel challenges the values and beliefs of a fallen world. Believers are encouraged to remain steadfast, trusting in the power of God's Word to transform hearts and minds, even in the face of opposition and rejection.
