The Nature of Hostility Toward God

Hostility toward God is a theme that runs throughout the Bible, reflecting the tension between human sinfulness and divine holiness. This enmity is rooted in the fallen nature of humanity and manifests in various forms, including rebellion, unbelief, and idolatry.

Origin of Hostility

The origin of hostility toward God can be traced back to the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve's disobedience marks the beginning of human rebellion against God. This act of defiance introduces sin into the world, creating a separation between humanity and the Creator. Romans 5:12 states, "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned."

Manifestations of Hostility

1. Rebellion and Disobedience: Throughout the Old Testament, Israel's history is marked by cycles of rebellion against God. Despite His covenant and commandments, the Israelites frequently turned away from Him, as seen in Judges 2:11-12 : "And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. They forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt."

2. Unbelief and Hardness of Heart: Hostility is also evident in unbelief and the hardening of hearts. In the New Testament, Jesus encounters this resistance among the Pharisees and others who reject His message. John 12:37-40 highlights this: "Although Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: 'Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?'"

3. Idolatry: Idolatry is a significant expression of hostility toward God, as it involves the worship of created things rather than the Creator. Romans 1:21-23 describes this condition: "For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles."

Consequences of Hostility

The Bible warns of the dire consequences of maintaining hostility toward God. Romans 8:7 states, "The mind of the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so." This enmity results in spiritual death and separation from God, as seen in Isaiah 59:2 : "But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear."

Divine Response to Hostility

Despite humanity's hostility, God's response is one of grace and redemption. The ultimate expression of His love is found in the sending of His Son, Jesus Christ, to reconcile the world to Himself. Romans 5:8-10 declares, "But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him! For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!"

Overcoming Hostility

The Bible calls individuals to overcome hostility toward God through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Acts 3:19 urges, "Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away." Through the work of the Holy Spirit, believers are transformed, and the enmity is replaced with peace and reconciliation, as described in Ephesians 2:14-16 : "For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and reconciling both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He extinguished their hostility."
