The Influence of Environment

The concept of environment and its influence on individuals is a recurring theme throughout the Bible. Scripture often illustrates how surroundings, both physical and social, can impact one's spiritual and moral life. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings that highlight the importance of being mindful of one's environment and the company one keeps.

Old Testament Insights

In the Old Testament, the environment is frequently depicted as a factor that can either lead individuals toward or away from God. The account of Lot in Genesis is a poignant example. Lot chose to live in the city of Sodom, a place known for its wickedness. Genesis 13:12-13 states, "Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against the LORD." Lot's choice of environment ultimately led to moral compromise and personal loss.

The Israelites' journey through the wilderness also underscores the influence of environment. In Deuteronomy 6:10-12 , God warns the Israelites about the dangers of prosperity in the Promised Land: "When the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers...a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build...be careful that you do not forget the LORD." Here, the environment of abundance poses a risk of spiritual complacency and forgetfulness of God.

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament continues to emphasize the impact of environment, particularly through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks about the importance of being a light in the world, suggesting that believers should positively influence their surroundings rather than be negatively influenced by them. Matthew 5:14-16 states, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

The Apostle Paul frequently addresses the influence of social environments in his epistles. In 1 Corinthians 15:33 , he warns, "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" Paul advises believers to be cautious about their associations, recognizing that the people around them can significantly impact their spiritual health.

Practical Applications

The Bible encourages believers to create and maintain environments that foster spiritual growth and moral integrity. Proverbs 13:20 advises, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." This proverb underscores the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals who encourage godliness and wisdom.

Furthermore, the early Christian community serves as a model for creating a supportive and nurturing environment. Acts 2:42 describes the early believers: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." This communal environment was instrumental in the spiritual development and perseverance of the early church.

Conclusion

The Bible consistently highlights the influence of environment on an individual's spiritual journey. Through various narratives and teachings, Scripture calls believers to be vigilant about their surroundings and to actively cultivate environments that promote faithfulness to God.
