The Goodness of the Law

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of the goodness of the Law is a significant theme in the Bible, reflecting the divine nature and purpose of God's commandments. The Law, given to Moses on Mount Sinai, is seen as a reflection of God's holiness and righteousness, serving as a guide for moral and spiritual living.

Divine Origin and Purpose

The Law is divinely instituted, as seen in Exodus 20:1-17, where God delivers the Ten Commandments to the Israelites. The Law's origin is rooted in God's covenant with His people, intended to set them apart as a holy nation. In Deuteronomy 6:24, it is stated, "And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day" . This verse underscores the Law's purpose for the well-being and preservation of God's people.

The Law as a Reflection of God's Character

The Law is a reflection of God's character, embodying His justice, mercy, and truth. Psalm 19:7-8 declares, "The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart; the commandments of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes" . These verses highlight the Law's perfection and its ability to bring wisdom, joy, and enlightenment to those who follow it.

The Law and Human Conduct

The Law serves as a moral compass, guiding human conduct and promoting justice and righteousness. In Leviticus 19:18, the command to "love your neighbor as yourself" encapsulates the ethical demands of the Law, emphasizing love and compassion as central to its observance. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 7:12, affirms the goodness of the Law, stating, "So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good" . Paul acknowledges the Law's role in revealing sin and guiding believers toward righteous living.

The Law and the New Covenant

While the Law is good, it is also fulfilled in Christ, who embodies its ultimate purpose. Jesus, in Matthew 5:17, asserts, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" . Through His life, death, and resurrection, Christ fulfills the Law's requirements, offering believers a new covenant of grace. The Law's goodness is thus seen in its role as a tutor leading to Christ, as expressed in Galatians 3:24, "So the Law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith" .

The Law in the Life of Believers

For believers, the Law remains a valuable guide for living a life pleasing to God. While salvation is through faith in Christ, the moral principles of the Law continue to instruct and shape Christian conduct. In 1 Timothy 1:8, Paul writes, "Now we know that the Law is good if one uses it lawfully" , indicating that the Law, when applied correctly, serves a beneficial role in the believer's life.

The goodness of the Law is thus multifaceted, reflecting God's character, guiding human conduct, and pointing to the redemptive work of Christ. It remains a testament to God's desire for a holy and righteous people, set apart for His purposes.
