The Exploits

The term "exploits" in a biblical context often refers to the remarkable deeds or acts of valor performed by individuals who are empowered by God. These acts are typically characterized by courage, faith, and divine intervention, and they serve to advance God's purposes and demonstrate His power and faithfulness.

Biblical Examples of Exploits

1. David and Goliath: One of the most well-known exploits in the Bible is the account of David and Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17, young David, armed only with a sling and five smooth stones, defeats the giant Philistine warrior Goliath. This act of bravery and faith is a testament to David's trust in God. David declares, "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine" (1 Samuel 17:37).

2. Jonathan's Victory: In 1 Samuel 14, Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and his armor-bearer achieve a significant victory over the Philistines. Jonathan's faith in God's ability to save is evident when he says, "Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few" (1 Samuel 14:6). Their bold attack leads to confusion among the Philistines and a great victory for Israel.

3. The Maccabees: While not part of the canonical Bible for most Protestant traditions, the exploits of the Maccabees are recorded in the books of 1 and 2 Maccabees, which are included in the Apocrypha. These texts describe the courageous actions of Judas Maccabeus and his brothers as they lead a revolt against the Seleucid Empire to restore Jewish worship and independence. Their exploits are celebrated during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

4. Daniel and His Companions: In the Book of Daniel, we see several instances of exploits performed by Daniel and his friends. Daniel's unwavering faith leads him to interpret dreams and visions, earning him a place of high honor in the Babylonian and Persian courts. His companions, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, refuse to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar's golden image and are miraculously delivered from the fiery furnace (Daniel 3). Their faith and courage are highlighted in Daniel 3:17-18, where they declare, "If the God we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up" .

Theological Significance

The exploits recorded in the Bible serve as powerful reminders of God's sovereignty and the importance of faith and obedience. They illustrate how God can use individuals, regardless of their status or strength, to accomplish His divine purposes. These acts of valor often occur in the face of overwhelming odds, underscoring the belief that "the battle is the LORD's" (1 Samuel 17:47).

Application for Believers

For contemporary believers, the exploits of biblical figures provide inspiration and encouragement to live lives of faith and courage. They remind Christians that God is still active in the world and that He empowers His people to perform great deeds for His glory. As Daniel 11:32 states, "But the people who know their God will display strength and take action." This verse encourages believers to deepen their relationship with God, trusting that He will enable them to accomplish His will in their lives.
