The Exaltation of Christ is a central tenet in Christian theology, referring to the glorification and honor bestowed upon Jesus Christ following His earthly ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. This exaltation encompasses His resurrection, ascension, and His current reign at the right hand of God the Father. It signifies the divine approval and authority granted to Christ, affirming His identity as the Son of God and the fulfillment of His redemptive work.

Resurrection

The resurrection of Jesus is the foundational event marking the beginning of His exaltation. According to the Scriptures, Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day, as He had foretold. This event is not only a demonstration of His victory over sin and death but also a pivotal moment that confirms His divine nature and the truth of His teachings. In Romans 1:4, the Apostle Paul writes, "and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord" . The resurrection is the first step in the exaltation process, as it validates Christ's claims and mission.

Ascension

Following His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples over a period of forty days, providing them with final instructions and affirming His teachings. The ascension, as recorded in Acts 1:9-11, marks the next phase of His exaltation. "After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight" . The ascension signifies Christ's return to the heavenly realm, where He assumes His rightful place of authority and glory. It is a visible demonstration of His exaltation, as He is lifted up and seated at the right hand of God.

Seated at the Right Hand of God

The position of being seated at the right hand of God is a metaphorical expression denoting power, authority, and honor. In Ephesians 1:20-21, Paul describes this exalted position: "He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in the present age but also in the one to come" . This seating signifies Christ's supreme authority over all creation and His role as the mediator between God and humanity.

Intercession and Reign

In His exalted state, Christ continues His work as the intercessor for believers. Hebrews 7:25 states, "Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them" . His intercession is an ongoing aspect of His exaltation, providing believers with access to the Father and ensuring their salvation.

Furthermore, Christ's exaltation includes His reign as King. Philippians 2:9-11 declares, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" . This passage highlights the universal recognition of Christ's lordship and the ultimate submission of all creation to His authority.

The Future Consummation

The exaltation of Christ will reach its consummation at His second coming, when He will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. At this time, His kingdom will be fully realized, and He will establish a new heaven and a new earth. Revelation 19:16 proclaims, "On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: King of kings and Lord of lords" . This future aspect of Christ's exaltation underscores the hope and assurance that believers have in His ultimate victory and eternal reign.
