Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, symbols of submission are physical or metaphorical representations that denote yielding, obedience, or deference to authority, whether divine or human. These symbols are woven throughout Scripture, illustrating the relationship between God and His people, as well as interpersonal relationships within the community of faith.

Head Coverings

One of the most explicit symbols of submission in the Bible is the head covering. In 1 Corinthians 11:3-10, the Apostle Paul discusses the practice of women covering their heads during prayer or prophecy as a sign of authority and submission. Paul writes, "A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels" . This passage highlights the head covering as a symbol of acknowledging the divine order and authority structure established by God.

Bowing and Kneeling

Bowing and kneeling are physical acts that symbolize submission and reverence throughout the Bible. In Genesis 24:26, Abraham's servant bows down and worships the LORD, acknowledging God's guidance and provision. Similarly, in Philippians 2:10, it is prophesied that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth" , signifying ultimate submission to Christ's lordship.

Servanthood

Servanthood is another profound symbol of submission in Scripture. Jesus Christ exemplified this through His life and teachings. In John 13:14-15, after washing His disciples' feet, Jesus says, "So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you" . This act of humility and service is a powerful symbol of submission to God's will and to one another in love.

Marriage

The marital relationship is often used as a metaphor for submission in the Bible. Ephesians 5:22-24 instructs, "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything" . This passage reflects the broader biblical theme of mutual submission within the body of Christ, as further emphasized in Ephesians 5:21, "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" .

The Yoke

The yoke is a symbol of submission to authority and discipline. In Matthew 11:29-30, Jesus invites His followers to take His yoke upon them, saying, "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" . The yoke represents the acceptance of Christ's teachings and the submission to His gentle and loving leadership.

Conclusion

Symbols of submission in the Bible serve as tangible reminders of the believer's relationship with God and others. They underscore the importance of humility, obedience, and reverence in the life of faith, reflecting the divine order and the call to live in harmony with God's will.
