Support for Priests and Levites

Topical Encyclopedia
The support for priests and Levites is a significant theme in the Old Testament, reflecting the special role these individuals played in the religious and communal life of Israel. The tribe of Levi was set apart for religious duties, with the priests coming from the line of Aaron, a Levite. Their responsibilities included performing sacrifices, maintaining the sanctuary, and teaching the law to the people.

Biblical Foundation

The foundation for the support of priests and Levites is established in the Pentateuch. In Numbers 18:20-21, the LORD speaks to Aaron, saying, "You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites. Behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the work of the Tent of Meeting" . This passage underscores that the Levites were to be sustained by the tithes of the people, as they had no land inheritance like the other tribes.

Tithes and Offerings

The system of tithes and offerings was central to the support of the Levitical priesthood. The Israelites were commanded to bring a tenth of their produce and livestock as a tithe to the Levites (Leviticus 27:30-33). In turn, the Levites were to offer a tenth of the tithes they received to the priests, the descendants of Aaron (Numbers 18:26-28). This system ensured that those who ministered before the LORD were provided for, allowing them to focus on their sacred duties.

Additional Provisions

Beyond tithes, there were other provisions for the priests and Levites. Certain portions of the sacrifices, such as the breast and thigh of the peace offerings, were designated for the priests (Leviticus 7:31-34). Additionally, the firstfruits of the harvest and the firstborn of animals were to be given to the priests (Deuteronomy 18:3-5). These offerings were a tangible expression of the people's gratitude and acknowledgment of the priests' role in mediating between God and Israel.

Historical Context

Throughout Israel's history, the support for priests and Levites varied. During times of national faithfulness, such as under King Hezekiah, the people generously provided for the Levites, enabling them to carry out their duties effectively (2 Chronicles 31:4-10). However, during periods of apostasy, the neglect of tithes and offerings led to the Levites abandoning their posts to seek sustenance elsewhere (Nehemiah 13:10-11).

New Testament Perspective

While the New Testament does not prescribe a Levitical priesthood, the principle of supporting those who minister in spiritual matters continues. In 1 Corinthians 9:13-14, Paul draws a parallel, stating, "Do you not know that those who serve in the temple eat of its food, and those who attend to the altar share in the offerings? In the same way, the Lord has prescribed that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel" . This reflects the enduring principle that those dedicated to spiritual service should be supported by the community of believers.

Conclusion

The biblical mandate for supporting priests and Levites highlights the importance of sustaining those who serve in spiritual capacities. This support allowed them to fulfill their God-given roles without distraction, ensuring the spiritual well-being of the nation. The principles established in the Old Testament continue to inform the practice of supporting religious leaders in the Christian tradition today.
