Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, wealth is often seen as a sign of God's blessing. Figures such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Job were materially prosperous, and their wealth is depicted as a reward for their faithfulness and obedience to God. Genesis 13:2 notes, "And Abram had become extremely wealthy in livestock and silver and gold." Similarly, Job is described as "the greatest man among all the people of the East" (Job 1:3), with vast possessions that signify his blessed status.

The Law of Moses includes provisions for the fair treatment of the poor and the responsible use of wealth. Deuteronomy 15:7-8 instructs, "If there is a poor man among your brothers within any of the gates in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you are not to harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor brother. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows."

Acts 4:34-35 describes the early church's practice of sharing possessions: "There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales, and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need."
