Resen is a city mentioned in the Bible, specifically in the Book of Genesis, as part of the early post-Flood world. It is one of the cities founded by Nimrod, a mighty hunter and ruler, who is a descendant of Ham, the son of Noah. The reference to Resen is found in Genesis 10:12, which states: "and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city" .

Biblical Context

Resen is listed among the cities in the land of Shinar, which is often associated with the region of Mesopotamia. The passage in Genesis 10:8-12 provides a genealogical account of the descendants of Noah's sons, focusing on the lineage of Ham through Cush, leading to Nimrod. Nimrod is described as a powerful figure, and his kingdom is said to have included Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh in the land of Shinar. Resen is mentioned as being situated between Nineveh and Calah, two other significant cities of the ancient world.

Historical and Geographical Significance

The exact location of Resen has been a subject of debate among scholars and archaeologists. It is generally believed to have been located in the region of Assyria, given its proximity to Nineveh and Calah. Nineveh, known for its later prominence as the capital of the Assyrian Empire, and Calah (modern-day Nimrud) were both significant urban centers in ancient Mesopotamia. Resen's mention as "the great city" suggests it held considerable importance during its time, although it did not achieve the same level of historical renown as Nineveh or Calah.

Theological Implications

From a theological perspective, the mention of Resen in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10) serves to illustrate the spread of humanity and the establishment of early civilizations following the Flood. The narrative underscores the fulfillment of God's command to Noah and his descendants to "be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth" (Genesis 9:1). The founding of cities like Resen by figures such as Nimrod highlights the development of human society and the rise of organized governance and culture.

Cultural and Archaeological Insights

While Resen itself has not been definitively identified in archaeological records, its association with Nineveh and Calah places it within a region rich in historical and cultural significance. The Assyrian Empire, which later dominated this area, is known for its advanced architecture, art, and military prowess. The cities of Nineveh and Calah have yielded numerous archaeological discoveries that provide insight into the life and times of ancient Mesopotamian civilizations.

In summary, Resen is a biblical city mentioned in the context of the early post-Flood world, associated with the mighty hunter Nimrod and situated between the prominent cities of Nineveh and Calah. Its mention in the Bible serves as a testament to the spread of human civilization and the establishment of early urban centers in the ancient Near East.

Smith's Bible Dictionary
Resen

(bridle), (Genesis 10:12) one of the cities built by Asshur, "between Nineveh and Calah." Assyrian remains of some considerable extent are found near the modern village of Selamiyeh , and it is perhaps the most probable conjecture that these represent Resen.

ATS Bible Dictionary
Resen

An ancient Assyrian city, between Nineveh and Calah, Genesis 10:12. Its exact position cannot now be determined.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Head of the stream; bridle, one of Nimrod's cities (Genesis 10:12), "between Nineveh and Calah." It has been supposed that the four cities named in this verse were afterwards combined into one under the name of Nineveh (q.v.). Resen was on the east side of the Tigris. It is probably identified with the mound of ruins called Karamless.

RESEN

re'-sen (recen; Septuagint Dasen, Dasem):

1. The Name and Its Native Equivalent:

The Greek forms show that the Septuagint translators had "d", for "r", but the reading of the Massoretic Text is to be preferred. Resen-the last of the four cities mentioned in Genesis 10:11, 12 as having been founded by Nimrod (the King James Version by Asshur)-probably represents the Assyrian pronunciation of the place-name Res-eni, "fountainhead." The only town so named in the inscriptions is one of 18 mentioned by Sennacherib in the Bavian inscription as places from which he dug canals connecting with the river Khosr-in fact, it was one of the sources of Nineveh's water supply. It probably lay too far North, however, to be the city here intended. Naturally the name "Resen" could exist in any place where there was a spring.

2. Possibly the Modern Selamiyeh:

As the Biblical text requires a site lying between Nineveh and Calah (Kouyunjik and Nimroud), it is generally thought to be represented by the ruins at Selamiyeh, about 3 miles North of the latter city. It is noteworthy that Xenophon (Anab. iii.4) mentions a "great" city called Larissa as occupying this position, and Bochart has suggested that it is the same place. He supposes that when the inhabitants were asked to what city the ruins belonged, they answered la Resen, "to Resen," which was reproduced by the Greeks as Larissa. Xenophon describes its walls as being 25 ft. wide, 100 ft. high, and 2 parasangs in circuit. Except for the stone plinth 20 ft. high, they were of brick. He speaks of a stone-built pyramid near the city-possibly the temple-tower at Nimroud.

See CALAH; NINEVEH, 10.
