Jotham, the son of Uzziah (also known as Azariah) and Jerusha, daughter of Zadok, was the eleventh king of the Kingdom of Judah. His reign is chronicled in the biblical books of 2 Kings 15:32-38 and 2 Chronicles 27. Jotham ascended to the throne following the leprosy-induced isolation of his father, Uzziah, and ruled for sixteen years in Jerusalem, approximately from 750 to 735 BC.

Character and Reforms

Jotham is noted for his righteous character and adherence to the ways of the LORD, as his father Uzziah had done. 2 Kings 15:34 states, "And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done." However, unlike his father, Jotham did not enter the temple of the LORD, thus avoiding the sin that led to Uzziah's downfall. Despite his personal piety, the high places were not removed, and the people continued their sacrifices and offerings there, indicating a partial reform in religious practices.

Military and Building Achievements

Jotham's reign was marked by significant building projects and military successes. He fortified the wall of Ophel in Jerusalem, built cities in the hill country of Judah, and constructed fortresses and towers in the forests (2 Chronicles 27:3-4). These constructions not only strengthened the kingdom's defenses but also demonstrated Jotham's administrative capabilities and commitment to the prosperity of Judah.

Militarily, Jotham successfully waged war against the Ammonites, who became subject to him and paid a substantial tribute for three consecutive years. 2 Chronicles 27:5 records, "Jotham also fought the king of the Ammonites and prevailed against them. That year the Ammonites paid him a hundred talents of silver, ten thousand cors of wheat, and ten thousand cors of barley. They paid him the same in the second and third years."

Spiritual Legacy

Jotham's reign is characterized by a steadfast commitment to God, which brought stability and strength to Judah. 2 Chronicles 27:6 summarizes his reign: "So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God." His faithfulness to God set a standard for leadership, even though the people did not fully follow his example.

Historical Context

Jotham's reign occurred during a period of relative peace and prosperity for Judah, sandwiched between the more tumultuous reigns of his father Uzziah and his son Ahaz. The geopolitical landscape was shifting, with the rising threat of Assyria under Tiglath-Pileser III. Jotham's policies and military successes helped to maintain Judah's independence and stability during this time.

Death and Succession

Jotham died and was buried in the City of David, and his son Ahaz succeeded him as king. His reign, though brief, is remembered for its faithfulness to God and the strengthening of Judah's infrastructure and military might.
