Protection of Jeremiah

Topical Encyclopedia
Jeremiah, often referred to as the "weeping prophet," is a significant figure in the Old Testament, known for his prophecies concerning the impending judgment and exile of Judah. Despite the challenging and often perilous nature of his ministry, the protection of Jeremiah by God is a recurring theme throughout the Book of Jeremiah. This divine safeguarding underscores God's sovereignty and faithfulness to His servants, even amidst adversity.

Divine Calling and Assurance

Jeremiah's prophetic ministry begins with a divine calling, where God assures him of His protection. In Jeremiah 1:5, God declares, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations." This calling is accompanied by a promise of divine protection. In Jeremiah 1:8, God commands, "Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD. This assurance is foundational, setting the stage for Jeremiah's ministry amidst opposition.

Protection from Hostile Forces

Throughout his ministry, Jeremiah faced significant hostility from various quarters, including kings, priests, and false prophets. Despite these threats, God's protection is evident. In Jeremiah 20:1-2, Pashhur the priest strikes Jeremiah and puts him in stocks. Yet, Jeremiah remains unharmed and continues to prophesy boldly. God's promise in Jeremiah 1:19 is fulfilled: "They will fight against you but will never overcome you, since I am with you to rescue you," declares the LORD.

Deliverance from Death

One of the most notable instances of divine protection occurs when Jeremiah is threatened with death. In Jeremiah 26, after prophesying against the temple and the city, the priests and prophets demand his execution. However, the officials and people recognize Jeremiah's divine commission, and he is spared. Jeremiah 26:24 notes, "Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death." This intervention highlights God's providential care through human agents.

Protection in the Midst of Siege

During the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, Jeremiah is imprisoned for his prophecies of doom. Despite the dire circumstances, God continues to protect him. In Jeremiah 38, when Jeremiah is cast into a cistern and left to die, Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian eunuch, intercedes and rescues him. Jeremiah 38:13 records, "And they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern." This act of deliverance is a testament to God's unwavering protection.

Preservation in Exile

After the fall of Jerusalem, Jeremiah is taken captive by the Babylonians. However, God ensures his safety even in exile. In Jeremiah 39:11-12, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, gives orders concerning Jeremiah: "Take him, look after him, and do not let any harm come to him; do for him whatever he says." This directive from a foreign king illustrates God's control over nations and His ability to protect His prophet through unexpected means.

Conclusion

The protection of Jeremiah throughout his ministry is a powerful demonstration of God's faithfulness and sovereignty. Despite facing intense opposition and danger, Jeremiah's life and mission are preserved by divine intervention. This theme of protection not only affirms God's commitment to His servants but also serves as an encouragement to believers, reminding them of God's enduring presence and protection in the face of adversity.
