The prophecy concerning Jeroboam's reign is a significant event in the history of Israel, marking the division of the united monarchy and the establishment of the northern kingdom. This prophecy is primarily found in
1 Kings 11:26-40, where the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite delivers God's message to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.
BackgroundJeroboam was an Ephraimite from Zeredah, a servant of King Solomon, and a man of valor. Solomon recognized Jeroboam's industrious nature and appointed him over all the labor force of the house of Joseph (
1 Kings 11:28). However, as Solomon's heart turned away from the LORD due to his foreign wives and idolatry, God decided to tear the kingdom from Solomon's lineage, sparing only a portion for the sake of David and Jerusalem.
The ProphecyThe prophecy is delivered by Ahijah, who meets Jeroboam on the road. Ahijah takes hold of the new cloak he is wearing, tears it into twelve pieces, and instructs Jeroboam to take ten pieces for himself. This act symbolizes the division of the kingdom. Ahijah declares:
"Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribes. But one tribe will remain with him for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.’" (
1 Kings 11:31-32).
The prophecy further explains that this division is a direct consequence of Solomon's idolatry and failure to keep God's statutes and commandments. Despite this, God promises Jeroboam a lasting dynasty if he walks in obedience, as David did:
"If you listen to all that I command you, and if you walk in My ways and do what is right in My sight, keeping My statutes and commandments as My servant David did, I will be with you. I will build you a lasting dynasty as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you." (
1 Kings 11:38).
Fulfillment and SignificanceThe prophecy is fulfilled after Solomon's death when his son Rehoboam ascends the throne. Due to Rehoboam's harsh policies, the ten northern tribes rebel and make Jeroboam their king, thus establishing the northern kingdom of Israel (
1 Kings 12:16-20). This division fulfills God's word through Ahijah and marks a pivotal moment in Israel's history, leading to distinct religious and political developments in the northern and southern kingdoms.
Jeroboam's reign, however, is marred by his failure to remain faithful to God. He establishes golden calves at Bethel and Dan, leading Israel into idolatry (
1 Kings 12:28-30). This act of disobedience ultimately results in judgment against his house, as foretold by another prophet (
1 Kings 14:7-11).
The prophecy of Jeroboam's reign serves as a testament to God's sovereignty and the conditional nature of His promises, emphasizing the importance of obedience and faithfulness to His commandments.
