The concept of a "Place of Instruction" in the Bible refers to locations where teaching and learning about God's laws, wisdom, and ways occur. These places are significant in the spiritual and communal life of the Israelites and the early Christian church, serving as centers for religious education, worship, and the transmission of divine knowledge.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the primary place of instruction was the Tabernacle, and later the Temple in Jerusalem. These were not only centers for worship and sacrifice but also for teaching the Law. The priests and Levites played a crucial role in instructing the people in the statutes and commandments of the Lord. Deuteronomy 31:9-13 emphasizes the importance of public reading and teaching of the Law: "So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. Then Moses commanded them, 'At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of remission of debts, during the Feast of Tabernacles, when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place He will choose, you shall read this law in the hearing of all Israel.'"

The synagogues, which emerged during the Babylonian exile, became vital places of instruction. They served as local centers for teaching the Scriptures and were integral to Jewish religious life. In Nehemiah 8:1-8 , we see an example of public instruction: "All the people gathered as one man in the square before the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel."

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, synagogues continued to be places of instruction. Jesus Himself taught in synagogues, as seen in Luke 4:16-21 : "He went to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him."

The early Christian church also established places of instruction. The apostles taught in the Temple courts and from house to house, as described in Acts 5:42 : "Every day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ."

Role of Instruction

Instruction in these places was not merely academic but was intended to lead to a deeper understanding of God's will and a more faithful adherence to His commands. Proverbs 1:7 underscores the foundational role of instruction: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."

The Apostle Paul emphasized the importance of sound teaching in the church, instructing Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2 : "And the things you have heard me say among many witnesses, entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."

Conclusion

The "Place of Instruction" in biblical times was essential for the spiritual growth and development of God's people. Whether in the Temple, synagogue, or early church gatherings, these places served as vital centers for learning and living out the truths of Scripture.
