Organization of the Levites

Topical Encyclopedia
The Levites, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, were set apart for special religious duties and played a crucial role in the spiritual life of the nation. Their organization and responsibilities are detailed primarily in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The Levites were descendants of Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah, and were chosen by God to serve in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Divine Selection and Purpose

The Levites were chosen by God to replace the firstborn of Israel, who were originally consecrated to Him. This selection is articulated in Numbers 3:12-13 : "Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of every firstborn Israelite from the womb. The Levites belong to Me, for every firstborn belongs to Me. On the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated to Myself every firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They are Mine; I am the LORD."

Tribal Organization

The tribe of Levi was divided into three main families, each descending from one of Levi's three sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Each family had specific duties related to the tabernacle:

1. Gershonites: Responsible for the care of the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and entrance screens (Numbers 3:25-26).

2. Kohathites: Charged with the care of the sanctuary's most sacred objects, including the Ark of the Covenant, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the articles of the sanctuary used in ministering (Numbers 3:31).

3. Merarites: Tasked with the maintenance of the tabernacle's framework, including the boards, bars, pillars, and bases (Numbers 3:36-37).

Priestly Duties

Within the tribe of Levi, the family of Aaron, a descendant of Kohath, was set apart for the priesthood. Aaron and his sons were consecrated as priests, with Aaron serving as the first high priest. The priests were responsible for performing sacrifices, maintaining the altar, and conducting various rituals and ceremonies as prescribed in the Mosaic Law.

Support and Sustenance

The Levites were not allotted a territorial inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. Instead, they were given cities to dwell in and were supported by the tithes and offerings of the people. Numbers 18:21 states, "Behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the work of the Tent of Meeting."

Role in Worship and Education

The Levites played a significant role in leading worship, teaching the Law, and maintaining the spiritual well-being of the nation. They were involved in singing, playing musical instruments, and assisting the priests in the temple services. In Deuteronomy 33:10 , Moses blesses the tribe of Levi, saying, "They shall teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; they shall set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar."

Historical Development

Throughout Israel's history, the role and organization of the Levites evolved. During the reign of King David, the Levites were organized into divisions for more efficient service in the temple (1 Chronicles 23-26). This organization continued into the time of Solomon and beyond, adapting to the needs of the temple worship.

The Levites' dedication to their duties and their unique role in Israel's religious life underscore their importance in the covenant community. Their service was integral to the worship and spiritual instruction of the people, reflecting their consecration to God and their pivotal place in His divine plan.
