Offering of Birds

Topical Encyclopedia
In the Old Testament, the offering of birds is a significant aspect of the sacrificial system established by God for the Israelites. This provision is primarily detailed in the book of Leviticus, which outlines the various offerings and sacrifices required under the Mosaic Law. The offering of birds was a gracious allowance for those who could not afford more expensive sacrifices, such as lambs or bulls, thus ensuring that all individuals, regardless of economic status, could participate in the sacrificial system and maintain a right relationship with God.

Types of Birds Used

The primary birds specified for offerings were turtledoves and young pigeons. These birds were readily available and less costly than larger animals, making them accessible to the poorer members of the community. Leviticus 1:14 states, "If, however, one’s offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, he is to present a turtledove or a young pigeon."

Purposes of Bird Offerings

1. Burnt Offerings: Birds could be offered as burnt offerings, symbolizing the worshiper's complete surrender and dedication to God. The entire bird was to be burned on the altar, signifying total consecration. Leviticus 1:15-17 provides instructions for this offering: "The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off its head, and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar."

2. Sin Offerings: For those who could not afford a lamb, birds were also acceptable as sin offerings. This provision is outlined in Leviticus 5:7, which states, "If, however, he cannot afford a lamb, he may bring to the LORD as restitution for his sin two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering."

3. Purification Offerings: After childbirth, women were required to offer a sacrifice for purification. If they could not afford a lamb, they could bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, as seen in Leviticus 12:8: "But if she cannot afford a lamb, she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering."

Significance in the New Testament

The offering of birds is also mentioned in the New Testament, highlighting its continued relevance during the time of Jesus. In Luke 2:24, Mary and Joseph offered "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons" at the temple following the birth of Jesus, in accordance with the law of the Lord. This act underscores their humble economic status and their adherence to the Mosaic Law.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons

The offering of birds serves as a powerful symbol of God's provision and inclusivity within the sacrificial system. It demonstrates that God values the heart and intent of the worshiper over the material value of the offering. This principle is echoed in the teachings of Jesus, who emphasized the importance of sincerity and humility in worship. The offering of birds reminds believers of God's grace and the accessibility of His forgiveness to all who seek Him with a contrite heart.
