Self-Control of Jesus

The self-control of Jesus Christ is a profound aspect of His character, demonstrating His divine nature and perfect humanity. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus exemplifies self-control in various situations, providing a model for believers to emulate.

Temptation in the Wilderness

One of the most significant demonstrations of Jesus' self-control is found in the account of His temptation in the wilderness. After fasting for forty days and nights, Jesus was physically weakened and vulnerable. Satan approached Him with three temptations, each designed to exploit His human needs and divine mission. In Matthew 4:1-11 , Jesus resists the devil's temptations by quoting Scripture, saying, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:4). His refusal to turn stones into bread, throw Himself from the temple, or bow to Satan for worldly power, underscores His unwavering commitment to God's will and His mastery over physical and spiritual desires.

Response to Provocation

Jesus' self-control is further evident in His interactions with others, particularly when provoked. In Luke 4:28-30 , when the people of Nazareth drove Him out of the town and attempted to throw Him off a cliff, Jesus calmly walked through the crowd and went on His way. His restraint in the face of hostility and rejection highlights His ability to maintain composure and focus on His mission.

Silence Before Accusers

During His trial and crucifixion, Jesus' self-control is profoundly displayed. Despite being falsely accused and unjustly treated, He remained silent before His accusers. In Matthew 27:12-14 , it is recorded, "And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer. Then Pilate asked Him, 'Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?' But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement." His silence fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 53:7, demonstrating His submission to God's redemptive plan and His control over His emotions and responses.

Prayer in Gethsemane

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus faced immense emotional and spiritual anguish as He anticipated His impending crucifixion. In Matthew 26:39 , He prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will." Despite His distress, Jesus exercised self-control by submitting His will to the Father's, choosing obedience over personal desire.

Teaching on Self-Control

Jesus not only exemplified self-control but also taught its importance to His followers. In Luke 9:23 , He instructed, "If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me." This call to self-denial and daily commitment to God's will reflects the self-control that Jesus Himself practiced and expected from His disciples.

Conclusion

The self-control of Jesus is a testament to His divine nature and perfect humanity. His ability to resist temptation, remain composed under provocation, and submit to God's will in the face of suffering serves as a model for believers. Through His example, Christians are encouraged to cultivate self-control as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and to follow in the footsteps of their Savior.
